North Shore Judo is Auckland's friendliest judo club, located in the heart of Northcote on the North Shore. Founded in 1969 by Sensei Ron Jones (5th Dan), our academy has shared a love of judo with thousands of players across Auckland and New Zealand.

Whether you're looking for judo classes in Auckland for your kids, want to learn judo as a beginner, or are an experienced judoka seeking quality training on the North Shore, our club welcomes you. We offer kids judo from age 4, junior classes for 7-14 year olds, and senior training for teens and adults at 88 College Road, Northcote, in the same building as Cornerstone BJJ, behind Transformation Academy. Join us for safe, supportive training at all levels.

Now led by coach Simon Greenhill, who started judo aged 5 and became a Judo New Zealand recognised National Club Coach in 2006, North Shore Judo club members are actively involved in local and international competitions. Our coaching team — Simon and Doug — are supported by experienced high-belt members who regularly share practical knowledge from different judo backgrounds. Families join us from Takapuna, Milford, Devonport, Glenfield, Wairau, Birkenhead, Birkdale, Albany, and nearby North Shore suburbs.

Do I have to be in shape?

Not at all. Our beginner classes are designed to build your fitness gradually, no matter where you’re starting from. You’ll improve as you train.

Can I come and watch a class?

Absolutely — you're encouraged and welcome to come along and watch or join any class. It's a great way to see how we train and whether judo is right for you or your child. No need to book — just sign up (online or with Simon at the club) and turn up on a training night.

Am I too old to start Judo?

Absolutely not! Judo is a sport for people of all ages. Whether you're a teenager or a senior, you can start learning and enjoying the benefits of judo. Our classes are designed to accommodate individuals at different stages of life, ensuring everyone can participate and progress at their own pace.

Will I get hurt?

Judo is a contact sport, so minor bumps and bruises can happen — but serious injuries are extremely rare. We teach proper breakfalls from day one, and our coaches always match you with adequate training partners at a so you can learn safely. Your safety is our priority.

How much do judo classes cost?

Our Pee Wees class (ages 4-6) is just $36 per month. Juniors (ages 7-14) and Seniors (15+) are $73 per month, which includes training on Tuesday nights. Prices are for a 3-month term. Your first class is always free — come try judo and meet our friendly members before you commit!

What age can kids start judo?

Kids can start judo at North Shore Judo from age 4 in our Pee Wees class. Children aged 7-14 join our Juniors class. Judo is a fantastic martial art for kids — it builds confidence, coordination, discipline, and fitness while teaching important values like respect and perseverance.

I'm a complete beginner — can I join?

Absolutely! Most of our members started as complete beginners. Our coaches will teach you everything from the ground up — from basic breakfalls to throws and groundwork. Judo is one of the best martial arts for beginners because the learning is hands-on, and our experienced coaches ensure everyone progresses safely.
